CultureCurtis "50 Cent" Jackson is making a major play in Houston, Texas, shaping the city's future leaders. The acclaimed rapper and entrepreneur has dramatically expanded his GUnity Business Lab program, providing high school students with crucial business skills and mentorship that could change their lives.
The GUnity Business Lab, a partnership with the Houston Independent School District (HISD) and Horizon United Group, offers a rigorous, year-long curriculum. Students learn how to establish and operate successful businesses, manage finances, and develop essential communication and daily living skills. The program culminates in an intense "Hustle Tank" competition, where young entrepreneurs pitch their innovative business concepts directly to 50 Cent and a panel of Houston judges for a chance at seed funding and invaluable mentorship.

The program has seen remarkable growth since its inception. In 2022, the GUnity Business Lab added three more high schools to its roster: Booker T. Washington, Jack Yates, and Madison, bringing the total number of participating schools to six. This expansion also led to an increase in student involvement, with 150 students from the six schools competing in the 2nd Annual "Hustle Tank" on May 10, 2023, at the University of Houston. That competition alone offered $500,000 in seed money to launch student business plans. The "Hustle Tank" competition continued its upward trajectory, with the 2026 event taking place at NRG Arena on May 20. Reports indicate that over 800 students applied to be part of the competition in 2026, showcasing the program's increasing reach and desirability among Houston's youth.
The GUnity Business Lab officially debuted in the fall of 2021, following an announcement by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner on May 17, 2021. At its launch, 50 Cent, through his G-Unity Foundation, made a substantial $300,000 donation, which HISD matched, bringing the total initial investment to $600,000. The pilot program initially selected 75 students from three historically underperforming HISD high schools: Kashmere, Wheatley, and Worthing. The official induction ceremony for these initial students took place on September 27, 2021, marking the beginning of a transformative journey for many.
The curriculum itself is designed to mirror MBA-level lessons, covering the entire lifecycle of a product or concept, from idea generation and market branding to company operations. These lessons are also aligned with the core values articulated in 50 Cent's book, "Hustle Harder, Hustle Smarter." Throughout the year, students receive guidance from a diverse group of mentors, including HISD educators, Houston business leaders, and professionals from major companies like Chase Bank and Microsoft, as well as local businesses such as Exotic Pop and She's Happy Hair. The G-Unity Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charitable organization established by 50 Cent in 2005, primarily funds these efforts, aiming to empower youth nationwide through programs fostering conscious capitalism and social and leadership skills.

50 Cent has expressed a deep personal connection to the students and the program's mission. He shared, "Some of them don't have both parents in the household. I had that in my background and experience, so I can relate to them on that level. It just makes it easier for me to communicate with them. I have every reason why you would not be successful in my background. So, it's like I don't care what you say to me.” He also conveyed his excitement for the program's future, stating, "Yeah, it's exciting like for me, and I want to make it bigger. You know, and Houston is the right place for it.”
Public officials and partners have lauded 50 Cent’s commitment. Mayor Sylvester Turner consistently praised Jackson's investment, noting, "I am deeply grateful to Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson for investing in Houston ISD students. This program will have a big impact on the lives of students and their families. It will provide a platform to help young people grow their skillset by learning how to be future entrepreneurs, scientists, engineers, and business leaders." The mayor also highlighted the program's alignment with his "Complete Communities Initiative" and broader efforts to create jobs within the city. Millard House II, who served as HISD Superintendent at the program's launch, remarked, "This is an exciting partnership for the students of HISD. Curtis Jackson moved to Houston and immediately invested in our children, becoming a stakeholder in their future." Al Kashani, President of Horizon United Group, expressed pride as a Houstonian, stating, "I'm so proud to be a partner with the program that changes the landscape of Houston." Elizabeth Martin, G-Unity executive director, pointed out the fundamental learning students receive, observing, "So many of our students say that they had never thought about how to even open a bank account, let alone how to open a business checking account, and that's huge.” Patrice Allen, HISD Director of Special Programs, emphasized the program’s role in addressing equity gaps, stating, “There's an equity gap that exists in the neighborhoods that these campuses are in. It's that whole idea that if you give a man to fish, he eats today but if you teach a man to fish, he eats for life.”
Students participating in the GUnity Business Lab have shared powerful testimonials about their experiences. Irmani Garcia, an 11th grader whose team "The Reading Rose" competed in the Hustle Tank, reflected on the unique opportunity, saying, “Certain people like me won't get this chance ever. I have been in some rooms where people say to leave, some rooms where I don't belong. This is teaching me how to find my spot in the world.” Another student noted, “The Lab has taught me to always take the opportunities I am presented with because I can grow academically, financially, and as a person. The Lab has given me real life experiences on how the business world works and the way people in it function. I have also learned about money and financial choices I should be making in order to grow myself and my business. The Lab is instilling knowledge and growth for me as a person.” Yet another student highlighted the boost in self-assurance, stating, “The lab has boosted my confidence and is teaching me different paths to achieve success.”
The program is more than just business education; it's about fostering confidence and belief in the students' own potential. By connecting them with real entrepreneurs and providing hands-on experience, the initiative is breaking down barriers and showing Houston's youth that entrepreneurship is within reach. 50 Cent’s investment in the community extends beyond this program; since moving to Houston, he has partnered with the Houston Rockets and Texans on sports initiatives and brought Thanksgiving meals to 1,000 families in need. His focus on the next generation of entrepreneurs through the GUnity Business Lab solidifies his deep commitment to the city’s future.
With increasing student applications and continued expansion, the GUnity Business Lab is set to cultivate a new generation of innovative thinkers and business owners in Houston. The initiative provides not just financial literacy and entrepreneurial skills, but also the confidence and mentorship vital for young people to navigate and succeed in the complex world of business, ensuring a lasting impact on their lives and the broader community.
