Aaron Pierre Shines in Latest 'Lanterns' Teaser

2w ago

The internet is buzzing following the release of the second official teaser for HBO Max's upcoming series, 'Lanterns.' Dropping on May 18, 2026, the new preview has intensified discussions and anticipation, especially with its haunting, repeated question: "Are you afraid?" This query, deeply embedded in the Green Lantern mythology, directly challenges the core themes of willpower and overcoming fear, and it's doing exactly what it's supposed to do—commanding attention.

At the heart of this new narrative is Aaron Pierre, who takes on the pivotal role of new recruit John Stewart, alongside veteran Lantern Hal Jordan, portrayed by Kyle Chandler. The series is slated to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on August 16, 2026, with an eight-episode run. Described as a grounded detective drama, the show draws comparisons to acclaimed series like 'True Detective,' signaling a departure from traditional superhero narratives and sprawling space operas.

The plot unfolds across two distinct timelines, weaving an intricate Earth-based murder mystery. One storyline is set in 2016, revolving around a murder in Rushville, Nebraska, while a connected mystery plays out in 2026. Hal Jordan, a seasoned but reportedly jaded Lantern, initially appears reluctant to train Stewart, who is presented as a new Lantern not originally destined for the role, having been chosen by the Guardians of the Universe.

Aaron Pierre, a 29-year-old British actor of Jamaican and Sierra Leonean descent, steps into the significant role of John Stewart. Pierre is an alumnus of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, graduating in 2016. His diverse career includes roles in the BBC One series 'The A Word,' Sky Atlantic's 'Britannia,' and Syfy's 'Krypton,' where he played Dev-Em. On stage, he garnered a commendation for the Ian Charleson Award for his portrayal of Cassio in 'Othello' at Shakespeare's Globe.

His filmography further boasts appearances in M. Night Shyamalan's 'Old,' 'Brother'—for which he earned a Canadian Screen Award for Best Supporting Performance—and 'Rebel Ridge.' Pierre also lent his voice to a young Mufasa in the film 'Mufasa: The Lion King' and famously portrayed Malcolm X in the series 'Genius.' Reports indicate that James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, described Pierre's audition opposite Kyle Chandler as a "miraculous moment," with director James Hawes praising Pierre's on-set presence as "magnificent"—noting it as "forceful, cool, and completely understated." Pierre himself encountered the character of John Stewart through the 'Justice League Unlimited' animated series during his childhood. Other actors reportedly considered for the role of John Stewart included Damson Idris and Stephan James.

Kyle Chandler embodies Hal Jordan, a character last seen in live-action in the 2011 'Green Lantern' film starring Ryan Reynolds. The teaser notably highlights a contentious yet intriguing dynamic between Hal and John. In one exchange, John questions, "Power like that. Shouldn't you have to work for it?" to which Hal sharply responds, "I've been doing this since you were a baby. And the only way you're going to get this ring is over my dead body." John, with a hint of sarcasm, then quips, "I think he likes me."

The teaser also features Hal explaining the ring's immense power, stating, "This ring, it's the greatest weapon in the universe. When and if to use it, that's the whole ball game, Junior." John also issues a stark warning, "Everybody is lying to us," with Hal adding, "You're not even here till we find out what they're hiding. Dangerous part of the job. You need to be fearless." Laura Linney appears in a mysterious role, with her character reportedly having a connection to John Stewart, and Nathan Fillion is set to appear as Guy Gardner, a Green Lantern Corps member. Other confirmed cast members include Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry, Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones. Sinestro, the leader of the Yellow Lantern Corps and Master of Fear, is confirmed as the main antagonist.

The series was developed by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and DC Comics writer Tom King, with Mundy serving as showrunner. James Gunn and Peter Safran are executive producers, and James Hawes directs the first two episodes. Filming for 'Lanterns' took place in Los Angeles from February to July 2025. This series is a key part of the DC Universe's "Chapter One: Gods and Monsters" slate for 2026, building upon the foundation established by the 2025 'Superman' film.

The significance of 'Lanterns' lies in the live-action debut of John Stewart, a character first introduced in 1971 by Dennis O'Neil and Neal Adams in 'Green Lantern No. 87.' Stewart has since grown into an enduring figure in the DC Comics universe, gaining widespread recognition among a new generation through the 'Justice League Unlimited' animated series. Public commentary has consistently underscored the importance of seeing a character of Stewart's cultural significance brought to life in a prestige HBO production.

Reports indicate that prior to this iteration, a 'Green Lantern' television series had been in development by Greg Berlanti since October 2019. However, that version was redeveloped after James Gunn and Peter Safran assumed roles as co-CEOs of DC Studios in October 2022. The initial teaser for 'Lanterns' reportedly drew some criticism for its muted color palette and perceived lack of "green" and traditional superhero elements, which the second teaser appears to address with more vibrant visuals and action. Public statements also show Damon Lindelof apologized in March 2026 for a "dumb joke" about the color "Green" that upset DC fans and a comics icon.

Looking ahead, Aaron Pierre is expected to reprise his role as John Stewart in Gunn's 'Man of Tomorrow' film, which is currently filming in Atlanta, Georgia, and is slated for release in 2027. The anticipation for 'Lanterns' highlights a pivotal moment for the DC Universe, promising a fresh, grounded take on a beloved character and a new chapter for the Green Lantern mythology.
