Barbra Streisand Misses Cannes Honor Due to Knee Surgery

2w ago

Barbra Streisand, the acclaimed 84-year-old American singer, actress, songwriter, and filmmaker, will miss a major career milestone this year. She announced on Sunday, May 17, 2026, that she is unable to attend the 79th Cannes Film Festival in France due to her ongoing recovery from knee surgery. This means she will not be there in person to accept the prestigious Honorary Palme d'Or, one of cinema's highest accolades, nor will she participate in the festival's programming celebrations.

The festival, which runs from May 12 to May 23, 2026, at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès de Cannes, was set to be a momentous occasion for the star. However, her medical team advised against the journey to France during her healing period. Streisand conveyed her deep regret in a public statement, saying, "On the advice of my doctors, as I continue recovering from a knee injury, I am sadly unable to attend the Festival de Cannes this year." She added, "But I am deeply honored to receive the Honorary Palme d'Or and had so been looking forward to celebrating the remarkable films of the 79th edition."

Her statement continued, expressing her anticipation of the event: "I was also very much looking forward to spending time with colleagues whom I so admire – and, of course, returning to France, a place I have always loved." She concluded her message by extending "warmest congratulations to all of the filmmakers from around the world whose extraordinary talent and creative vision are being celebrated this year" and offered "heartfelt thanks to the Festival, and to everyone who continues to support and champion the art of cinema."

Despite her physical absence, festival organizers confirmed that the tribute for her Honorary Palme d'Or will still take place as scheduled during the closing ceremony on Saturday, May 23, 2026. Festival President Iris Knobloch and General Delegate Thierry Frémaux, along with the entire festival team, sent Streisand their "warmest wishes for a prompt recovery." Frémaux had previously lauded Streisand as "the legendary synthesis between Broadway and Hollywood, between the music hall stage and the big screen," while Knobloch praised her as "a consummate creator and courageous citizen, whose example stands the test of time and continues to inspire."

This would have marked Streisand's first-ever visit to the Cannes Film Festival, making her inability to attend particularly notable. Her career spans over six decades, a testament to her enduring impact on both music and film. She holds the coveted EGOT status, having won Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards, a rare feat in the entertainment industry. Streisand is celebrated for her powerful voice and meticulous artistic vision, which she has consistently applied across her diverse projects.

Her filmography includes iconic roles such as in "Funny Girl" from 1968, which earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress. In 1976, she won an Oscar for Best Original Song for "A Star Is Born," making history as the first woman to be honored as a composer in that category. Streisand further broke ground with her 1983 film "Yentl," becoming the first woman to write, produce, direct, and star in a major studio film, showcasing her multifaceted talents and pioneering spirit.

Beyond her cinematic achievements, Streisand's musical career boasts an extensive discography, including 31 RIAA platinum-certified albums. She stands as the third-highest certified female artist in the United States, a testament to her widespread popularity and vocal prowess. The festival's decision to honor her despite her absence underscores the profound respect and admiration the international film community holds for her artistic legacy and substantial contributions to the art form.

The Honorary Palme d'Or is one of the most distinguished accolades in cinema, recognizing directors, actors, and other film personalities for their outstanding contributions to the art. It serves as a lifetime achievement award, distinguishing individuals who have significantly shaped global cinema. This year, Streisand is one of three recipients of the honor. Director Peter Jackson, known for the "Lord of the Rings" franchise, received his award at the opening ceremony on May 12, 2026, introduced by actor Elijah Wood. Actor John Travolta also unexpectedly received an Honorary Palme d'Or before the world premiere of his directorial debut, "Propeller One-Way Night Coach," reportedly prompting an emotional reaction where he stated, "This is beyond the Oscar. I can't believe this. This is the last thing I expected."

While her physical presence will be missed, the celebration of Barbra Streisand's monumental career and her receipt of such a prestigious award will undoubtedly remain a highlight of the 79th Cannes Film Festival. The event continues to affirm her indelible mark on entertainment, cementing her status as a true legend of the screen and stage.
