DMC & Idina Menzel Raise Over $1 Million for Foster Youth

1w ago

Hip-Hop royalty and Broadway's brightest star recently united in New York City, proving that when it comes to giving back, genre lines mean nothing. Rap legend Darryl "DMC" McDaniels and celebrated actress and singer Idina Menzel co-hosted "Celebrate This Way," a charity event that pulled in over $1 million, all dedicated to supporting foster youth and emerging artists.

The high-profile fundraiser took place last week at the Tribeca Rooftop, marking a significant moment where two distinct worlds converged for a shared philanthropic cause. The evening was a celebration of the ongoing partnership between McDaniels's The Felix Organization and Menzel's A BroaderWay Foundation. These two non-profits officially combined their efforts last summer, launching Camp Felix A BroaderWay in New York City, an innovative program that blends performing arts workshops with traditional camp experiences.

The event itself was a spectacle of talent and generosity. Idina Menzel delivered a powerful, stripped-down rendition of "Defying Gravity" from her iconic role in *Wicked*, later concluding her set with an emotional duet of "For Good." Not to be outdone, McDaniels energized the crowd with electrifying performances of Run-DMC classics, "It's Tricky" and "Walk This Way," transforming the rooftop venue into a full-blown concert experience. A truly touching part of the evening saw young campers take the stage, showcasing their talents through spoken word, singing, and dancing, all under the proud gaze of McDaniels and Menzel. The competitive auction also saw attendees bidding substantial amounts for the unique chance to perform alongside the two stars.

Darryl "DMC" McDaniels, a Rock 'n Roll Hall of Famer and a founding member of the legendary rap group Run-DMC, established The Felix Organization in February 2006. He co-founded it with Emmy Award-winning casting director Sheila Jaffe. Their shared experience as adoptees deeply motivated them to create an organization focused on enriching the lives of children within the foster care system. McDaniels often speaks about his belief in giving back, drawing parallels between the resilience of comic book superheroes and the inherent potential he sees in foster youth. He has been quoted saying, "For me, my superpower is hip-hop and rock and roll. The Felix Organization tries to create better situations for those kids in foster care; they're the next journalists and symphony members."

For nearly two decades, The Felix Organization has run camps for foster children across the nation, starting with Camp Felix in Putnam Valley in August 2006. Its reach has expanded dramatically, serving close to 4,000 children in various Camp Felix sessions and impacting over 20,000 children through its extensive summer camp and year-round programs. These programs include Camp Felix West in Los Angeles, Camp Felix in Kent, Connecticut, specifically for teen girls, Bryan's Camp Felix for teen boys, and Camp Felix Pride, which caters to LGBTQ+ youth. Furthermore, the organization launched a "Beyond Camp" grant program in 2012, designed to provide ongoing support for foster youth pursuing extracurricular interests throughout the year.

Sheila Jaffe, co-founder of The Felix Organization, is a highly respected figure in the entertainment industry with over two decades of experience and more than 120 credits as a casting director. Her impressive career includes a Primetime Emmy Award win in 1999 and five subsequent nominations for her work on HBO's critically acclaimed series "The Sopranos." She also received nominations for her contributions to "Entourage" between 2005 and 2007. Jaffe's extensive filmography features notable titles such as "The Fighter," "Rocky Balboa," and "Ted." Before her successful casting career, she managed Cafe Central in Manhattan during the 1980s, a popular spot frequented by many who would later become household names.

Idina Menzel, widely recognized for her commanding presence on Broadway and in film, is celebrated for her starring roles in hit productions like "Rent" and, of course, originating the role of Elphaba in "Wicked." Her philanthropic endeavors led her to establish A BroaderWay Foundation (ABW) in 2010, alongside Taye Diggs and Heather Zuckerman. Menzel's inspiration for ABW came from her own cherished childhood camp experiences, which she credits with profoundly shaping her identity. The foundation's core mission is to empower young women and gender-expansive youth through the arts, nurturing them into future leaders. A BroaderWay specifically focuses on providing avenues for self-expression and creativity, building self-esteem, cultivating leadership skills, and promoting personal and social achievement, particularly for girls from urban communities.

The collaboration between The Felix Organization and A BroaderWay Foundation deepened significantly in 2024, as the two organizations began the process of merging. This strategic move aims to unify their respective missions, broaden their programming, and amplify their collective impact. The merger integrates A BroaderWay's arts-focused programs into the established Camp Felix model, with a particular emphasis on leadership development. This focus extends especially to youth from the Mott Haven Academy Charter School, a population with whom The Felix Organization has maintained a long-standing partnership through The New York Foundling.

Reflecting on the joint effort, McDaniels stated that it was "a great collaboration of performance and music, and even greater collaboration of purpose with our organizations uniting to serve our foster youth." Menzel echoed this sentiment, noting that sharing the stage with the Hip-Hop icon made the experience even more powerful. She described his energy and commitment to uplifting young people as "absolutely palpable."

The success of the "Celebrate This Way" fundraiser, coupled with the ongoing partnership between McDaniels and Menzel's organizations, highlights the immense power of cross-genre collaboration for philanthropic causes. It underscores the critical importance of providing consistent mentorship and artistic opportunities to underserved youth, especially those navigating the foster care system. With eyes already on the future, both organizations are actively planning to expand the Camp Felix A BroaderWay programming, with new initiatives slated for the 2027 summer season.
