FedEx Freight's Major Investment Relaunches Arkansas CDL Program

1w ago

A quiet college town in northern Arkansas is making big moves in workforce development. FedEx Freight has stepped up with a substantial donation, allowing UA Northark to relaunch its Commercial Driver's License (CDL) training program this fall, opening doors to careers paying up to $90,000 annually.

This crucial revival follows an 18-month hiatus for the program at North Arkansas College of the University of Arkansas. The generous donation from FedEx Freight, North America's largest less-than-truckload (LTL) freight carrier, was initially announced on May 14, 2026, with further details emerging on May 20, 2026. The company provided two full-size tractors and two 48-foot trailers, ensuring students will train on the same industry-standard equipment they will encounter on the job.

The program is set to resume in Fall 2026, offering an intensive four-week training course. This accelerated curriculum is designed to quickly equip students with the necessary skills to transition from instruction directly into employment opportunities within the bustling transportation industry. UA Northark plans to offer multiple sessions throughout the year, aiming to meet the pressing regional workforce demands.

The CDL program will provide comprehensive technical knowledge and essential driving skills, adhering to the Entry Level Driver Training Curriculum. This curriculum meets and often exceeds current industry standards, preparing students for all components required for an Arkansas Class A Commercial Driving License. This includes the written test, the pre-trip inspection, the critical off-road skills test, and other vital non-driving activities central to the trucking profession.

Prerequisites for enrollment are straightforward: prospective students must be at least 18 years old for an intrastate CDL or 21 for an interstate CDL. They also need a valid Arkansas Driver's License, a satisfactory Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) record check, and must pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) mandated drug-screening test and physical exam.

College leadership expressed immense gratitude for the partnership. Dr. Rick Massengale, Chancellor of UA Northark, stated, "On behalf of the college, we are deeply grateful for this generous donation of two trucks and trailers in support of our CDL training program." He emphasized how the equipment would "directly strengthen hands-on learning, allowing our students to train on industry-standard vehicles so they graduate with the skills employers are looking for," adding that "Partnerships like this make a real difference in expanding workforce opportunities across our region."

Dr. Lewis Villines, UA Northark's Vice Chancellor for Workforce and Technical Education, highlighted the program's dedication to industry alignment. He noted, "I've been on the phone this morning with different trucking companies. Each company has its own training standards and requirements. We intend to align our program with those industry expectations and rigor. This is a great day to be a Pioneer."

From FedEx Freight's perspective, this investment addresses a critical operational need. Rodney Myers, Vice President of Human Resources for FedEx Freight, underscored the urgency, stating, "America is facing a serious shortage of professional drivers." Myers further explained, "Developing professional drivers is critical to FedEx Freight, the industry, and consumers. We are proud to partner with UA Northark to relaunch the CDL program and provide equipment to train safe and professional drivers."

The local community also stands to benefit significantly. Jeff Neilson, President and CEO of the Harrison Chamber of Commerce, remarked on the broader economic impact. "Trucking is essential to moving goods, supporting manufacturing, and creating new markets," Neilson said. He added that the donation "will strengthen the college's CDL program, expand training capacity, and help grow the skilled workforce in Harrison. It will also support local economic growth and help keep talent in our community."

This story is particularly significant due to the persistent national shortage of qualified professional truck drivers. This challenge impacts not only major freight carriers like FedEx but also the broader economy and consumers nationwide. The trucking industry has struggled with a driver deficit for years, with the pipeline for replacements often falling short of demand. FedEx Freight's direct investment in UA Northark's CDL program offers a tangible solution, helping to build a healthier driver pipeline for the future.

For individuals, the program presents an attractive pathway to a stable and well-paying career without the need for a four-year degree. Reports indicate that professional truck drivers can consistently earn between $60,000 and $90,000 annually. Specifically, the average annual pay for a FedEx Freight Truck Driver in the United States is approximately $79,239, with top earners reportedly reaching $100,000 annually. Some heavy truck driver positions can even offer salaries ranging from $90,000 to $110,000 per year. The intensive four-week nature of the course means students can become road-ready and employed quickly, making it an efficient route to a solid career.

This partnership between FedEx Freight and UA Northark exemplifies a growing trend across the country. Carriers are increasingly investing directly in training pipelines to overcome recruitment challenges and bolster the skilled workforce in local communities. This initiative in Harrison not only addresses an immediate industry need but also provides invaluable opportunities for individuals and strengthens the economic fabric of the region.
