Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade Talks Heat Up, Cavs Eyeing Star

1w ago

The NBA offseason is buzzing with major trade rumors, as reports surface that two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks may be heading for a split. Insider reports suggest the Bucks are actively exploring trade possibilities for their superstar, and the Cleveland Cavaliers have quickly become a focal point in the speculation.

This potential blockbuster deal represents a seismic shift for both franchises. Reports from NBA insider Shams Charania on May 11, 2026, indicated that the Milwaukee Bucks are "open for business" regarding trade calls and offers for Antetokounmpo. Charania further reported that Antetokounmpo has "made it clear to the Bucks that he believes the time has come for both sides to part ways." This development follows earlier reports that the Bucks had entertained offers for their superstar before the February 2026 trade deadline, though no deal materialized at that time.

On the Cleveland side, NBA insider Jake Fischer reported that the Cavaliers had been in trade talks with the Milwaukee Bucks prior to the February 2026 trade deadline. These discussions were reportedly centered on a deal involving Mobley for Antetokounmpo. The Bucks were said to be seeking Mobley and all of Cleveland's remaining draft capital in such a trade.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, a Nigerian-Greek professional basketball player born on December 6, 1994, has been a cornerstone for the Milwaukee Bucks since they drafted him 15th overall in 2013. His tenure has been nothing short of legendary, earning him two NBA MVP awards in 2019 and 2020, an NBA championship and Finals MVP in 2021, and an impressive ten NBA All-Star selections from 2017 to 2026. Antetokounmpo signed a five-year, $228 million supermax extension with the Bucks on December 15, 2020, which, at the time, was the largest contract in league history. He currently has two years remaining on this deal, with the second year structured as a player option for the 2027-28 season.

The Cavaliers' rising star, Evan Mobley, a power forward born on June 18, 2001, was drafted third overall by Cleveland in 2021. In July 2024, Mobley secured a five-year, $224.2 million rookie max extension with the Cavaliers. This contract included a performance incentive that would increase his salary from 25% to 30% of the salary cap if he were to win Defensive Player of the Year. That clause was triggered on April 24, 2025, when Mobley was named the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year, subsequently boosting the total value of his contract extension to $269 million.

This significant increase in Mobley's contract has a direct impact on the Cavaliers' financial outlook. The team's salary is projected to hit $219 million for the upcoming season, pushing them over the second salary apron. This financial position limits their access to crucial free agency exceptions and restricts their ability to trade future draft picks, making any major roster changes a complex endeavor.

The current trade speculation gained significant momentum in March 2026 when Milwaukee Bucks co-owners Wes Edens and Jimmy Haslam publicly addressed Antetokounmpo's future with the team. Edens was quoted stating, "Giannis is going into the last year [of his contract]. So one of two things will happen: Either he will be extended or he'll be traded." He further clarified the organization's stance, adding, "The likelihood you'll let him just kind of play out the last year, we can't afford that. It's not consistent with what's good for the organization. That's not a Giannis issue. That's any player that's in their last year."

Haslam, who is reportedly more involved in trade decisions for the Bucks, also signaled a desire for clarity regarding Antetokounmpo's situation before the upcoming June 23, 2026 NBA Draft. He commented, "Before the draft is a natural time. Because if Giannis does play somewhere else, we've got to have a lot of assets. That's [general manager] Jon [Horst]'s job to do, and if he's here, then you build the team differently.” These statements underscore the urgency for the Bucks to resolve their superstar's future.

For Cleveland, acquiring a player of Antetokounmpo's caliber would instantly elevate their championship aspirations, despite the financial gymnastics required. For Milwaukee, the departure of their franchise player would necessitate a complete retooling, with the acquisition of significant assets being paramount. The stakes are incredibly high for both organizations as the NBA offseason continues to unfold, with the June 23rd draft date looming as a critical deadline for the Bucks' decision-making process.
