HBO Drops Official Harry Potter Podcast Ahead of New Series

1w ago

The Wizarding World is expanding its digital footprint with the debut of "Harry Potter: The Official Film Podcast," a new audio and video series from HBO. This launch comes as fans gear up for the highly anticipated live-action television adaptation of the beloved book series, slated to hit screens in late 2026.

The podcast, which premiered on May 19, 2026, kicked off with a special two-episode release. New hour-long episodes are now scheduled to drop weekly, with each of the eight original *Harry Potter* films receiving two dedicated episodes. This extensive coverage promises an estimated 16 hours of content, guiding listeners and viewers through the cinematic journey of the franchise. The video version of the podcast is exclusively available on HBO Max, while the audio counterpart can be found on major podcast platforms like Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

Produced by HBO Max in collaboration with Pod People, the series is hosted by Rhianna Dhillon, an acclaimed film critic and broadcaster. Dhillon, known for her work with BBC Radio 1, BAFTA, and PodPod, is also a self-professed lifelong *Harry Potter* fan and a proud Slytherin. She brings a blend of professional expertise and genuine enthusiasm to the show. Each film's discussion features Dhillon alongside a rotating cast of co-hosts from the entertainment world, who share their personal connections to the series. A recurring segment, "Magic Makers," offers behind-the-scenes insights from special guests involved in the making of the Wizarding World films. Actor Khleo Thomas joined Dhillon for the initial two episodes, which delved into *Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone*.

The podcast's release strategically aligns with the 25th anniversary of the *Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone* film, which first premiered in 2001. This initiative is designed to rekindle excitement and re-engage both dedicated fans and new audiences with the Wizarding World, setting the stage for the forthcoming HBO live-action series. The new television adaptation is poised to debut in the United States on HBO and globally on HBO Max on December 25, 2026. Plans indicate a faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling's seven novels, with each season covering one book over a production timeline expected to span a decade.

Development for the live-action series was first reported to be underway in January 2021, with an official announcement made during a Warner Bros. investors meeting in April 2023. David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, had previously expressed a clear desire to develop "fresh" content related to *Harry Potter* for HBO Max. Reports from May 2022 indicated that he planned to meet with J.K. Rowling to discuss future projects. Zaslav has consistently emphasized a corporate strategy focused on leveraging valuable franchises, noting the long gaps since the last Superman and Harry Potter films. He stated that these franchises have historically been significant profit drivers for Warner Brothers, and that the possibility of more Potter content was discussed at an investors meeting, signaling serious intent.

Former Warner Bros. CEO Ann Sarnoff also commented on the franchise's potential in late 2021, stating that the company would love to develop more original *Harry Potter* series. She emphasized the importance of any new content remaining true to the canon and ethos of the Wizarding World. In December 2022, Warner Bros. Television CEO Channing Dungey further shared plans for expanding the franchise, underscoring the company's long-term vision.

The creative leadership for the live-action series includes showrunner and executive producer Francesca Gardiner, recognized for her Emmy-winning work on *Succession* and writing credits on *His Dark Materials*. Mark Mylod, an executive producer, will also direct multiple episodes, bringing his experience from shows like *Succession*, *Game of Thrones*, and *The Last of Us*. J.K. Rowling is also an executive producer, alongside Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film & TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films.

Casting for the iconic main roles was announced in May 2025, with Dominic McLaughlin cast as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. Gardiner and Mylod praised the casting, remarking on the wonderful talent of these three unique actors and expressing anticipation for their onscreen magic. Principal photography for the series began in July 2025 at Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire, England. The cast also includes notable names such as John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. Warwick Davis will return to the Wizarding World to play Professor Filius Flitwick. A trailer for the series, released in March 2026, reportedly garnered optimistic reactions from fans, who noted elements of whimsy and new scenes not present in the original films.

This comprehensive strategy, encompassing an official companion podcast and a new live-action series, highlights Warner Bros. Discovery's deep commitment to revitalizing and expanding the *Harry Potter* franchise. This approach follows the significant success of other Wizarding World ventures, such as the video game *Hogwarts Legacy*, which became the number one selling title in 2023 with over 23 million units sold. David Haddad, President of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, previously noted that *Harry Potter* fans desired a deep, immersive experience, and that *Hogwarts Legacy* ultimately delivered that ultimate fan fantasy after years of mobile game successes.

While the *Harry Potter* franchise maintains its cultural significance, it has also navigated challenges. J.K. Rowling's public stance on gender issues has reportedly led to controversy and a backlash from some fans. Stars from the original films, including Daniel Radcliffe, have publicly expressed support for the trans community, reflecting ongoing discussions surrounding the franchise's legacy and its future.
