Ice-T's Unforgettable First Words to Kelli Giddish on SVU SetCelebrity

Ice-T's Unforgettable First Words to Kelli Giddish on SVU Set

4d ago

It was a whirlwind introduction that set the tone for a decade-long partnership. Kelli Giddish, known for her role as Detective Amanda Rollins on NBC's long-running crime drama Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, recently opened up about her unforgettable first encounter with the legendary Ice-T on set.

The actress, now 46, reflected on the chaotic day she joined the SVU cast in 2011 for its thirteenth season. Giddish had just wrapped another film in Los Angeles where her character met a violent end, leaving her hair noticeably tinged pink from fake blood. Immediately after filming concluded on a Thursday night, she boarded a red-eye flight to New York. To compound the frantic schedule, she was also juggling a recurring guest role on CBS's The Good Wife. Arriving on the SVU set, her pink hair was still very much a part of her look. She recalled the crew pointing it out, to which she simply responded, "Sorry. Think we can just put it up?"

It was under these less-than-glamorous circumstances that Giddish first met Tracy Lauren Marrow, better known as Ice-T, for their initial scene together. Giddish, trying to make light of her appearance, introduced herself and explained the series of events that led to her unusually colored hair. Ice-T, with his signature cool demeanor, offered a concise and memorable reply. Giddish recounted telling him, "I was like, 'Hey, how are you? I thought I'd do this,'" to which he famously responded, "'You do you, boo.'" Her immediate reaction? "'Awesome. Love it.'"

This brief exchange, despite the frantic backdrop of her arrival, immediately solidified a bond between the two actors. Giddish characterized the interaction as foundational, stating, "'That relationship was set in stone right there: mutual respect and love.'" The sheer madness of that initial day, she noted, ultimately convinced her to make a permanent move to New York, the city where SVU is filmed.

Ice-T, born February 16, 1958, in Newark, New Jersey, is a towering figure in American culture. A pioneering rapper, actor, songwriter, and producer, he rose to prominence in the 1980s as a key voice in "gangsta rap," releasing his debut album *Rhyme Pays* in 1987. He also co-founded the heavy metal band Body Count in 1990. His acting career is equally impactful, with notable roles in films like *New Jack City* in 1991. Ice-T joined Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 2000 as Detective Odafin "Fin" Tutuola, a role he has maintained for over two decades, earning him the distinction of being the longest-running male series actor in American television history.

Giddish, born April 13, 1980, in Cumming, Georgia, has a substantial career in television, stage, and film. Before her long tenure on SVU, she played Di Henry in *All My Children* from 2005 to 2007 and had roles in *Past Life* and *Chase*. Interestingly, she had a guest appearance on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 2007 as a different character, Kara Bawson, several years before joining as a series regular.

Their characters, Detective Rollins and Sergeant Tutuola, became partners on the police force, and their portrayers developed a strong rapport off-screen. Ice-T has publicly lauded Giddish, asserting, "'Kelli is dope. Me and her were teammates and partners.'" He even shared a piece of practical acting advice he once gave her regarding hitting her marks on set, telling her, "'Kelli, whenever I'm on my mark, I just hear the money going into my pocket. And when I'm off my mark, I hear it going outta my pocket.'"

Giddish's departure from SVU as a series regular in December 2022, after 11 years, came as a surprise to both cast members and fans. Ice-T commented on the decision, saying, "'No one really expected her to leave the show. We got blindsided by that.'" Despite her exit as a regular, Giddish's character, Amanda Rollins, who married Peter Scanavino's character Dominick "Sonny" Carisi Jr. on the show, continued to make recurring appearances.

However, in a development widely celebrated by the fanbase, Giddish was confirmed to return as a series regular for season 27 of SVU, which is set to premiere in September 2025. Ice-T specifically credited the show's dedicated fanbase for her return, stating, "'But the fans said they wanted to see Kelli back, so she's coming back.'" Mariska Hargitay, the series' long-standing star who portrays Captain Olivia Benson, also expressed her excitement, remarking, "'She is a formidable actress and an incredibly creative partner and has been such a joy and huge part of the fabric of SVU. I love her, and I love acting with her and co-creating with her, and it feels like home with her. So, I am ecstatic about her return.'"

The enduring nature of their bond extends beyond the set, with Giddish even appearing in the music video for "All Love Is Lost" by Ice-T's band Body Count. The personal connection between the actors and the show is further highlighted by the fact that Giddish's real-life pregnancies were thoughtfully incorporated into her character's storylines on SVU.

This story of a chaotic first impression evolving into a deep professional and personal respect underscores the unique dynamics that can form on a long-running production like Law & Order: SVU. As Giddish prepares to rejoin the cast as a full-time regular, the chemistry between her and Ice-T, forged in those early, memorable moments, continues to be a cornerstone of the beloved series.
