iPhone 18 Pro Leaks Detail Massive Overhaul, Variable Aperture Camera

3d ago

Apple is gearing up for what could be its most ambitious iPhone launch in years. New leaks and industry whispers are detailing a major hardware overhaul for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, models anticipated to hit shelves in fall 2026. These devices are expected to bring substantial changes, from display technology to advanced camera capabilities, signaling a bold push from the tech giant.

The most striking design change reportedly involves the front display. Sources indicate that the iPhone 18 Pro will finally move Face ID sensors beneath the screen, allowing for a punch-hole design rather than the wider Dynamic Island cutout seen in previous models. This shift was first detailed in a video by Apple tipster Jon Prosser of Front Page Tech on January 19, 2026. Prosser noted that while the Dynamic Island's functionality wouldn't disappear, it would operate behind a much smaller cutout, altering how live activities and alerts are presented. This claim was supported by prolific Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station, who also provided display specifications: a 6.27-inch screen for the Pro and a 6.9-inch screen for the Pro Max, both featuring LTPO technology and a 120 Hz refresh rate. The Information further corroborated the under-display Face ID for both Pro models, adding that the front-facing camera would be repositioned to the top-left corner of the screen. While MacRumors suggested a partial implementation, requiring some form of the Dynamic Island, leaked images from @earlyappleleaks and a screen protector image shared by Ice Universe appeared to confirm a significantly reduced cutout, with Ice Universe describing it as approximately 35% narrower than the current iPhone 17 Pro version.

Beyond the display, the camera system is slated for a major upgrade. Multiple reports, including those from Digital Chat Station and The Information, point to at least one rear camera on the iPhone 18 Pro featuring a variable aperture. This technology, which allows the lens opening to physically adjust to control light, offers enhanced exposure control and greater flexibility over depth of field. Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo initially flagged this feature in late 2024, and it has reportedly entered production. The variable aperture lens is expected to cost Apple 50% more than the camera units used in current models. Despite the increased manufacturing costs, reports suggest Apple may absorb these expenses to remain competitive against Android rivals, who have been raising phone prices. Sunny Optical is also expected to become a new compact camera module supplier, potentially handling a significant portion of the iPhone 18 Pro's camera orders.

The timeline of these leaks began to intensify in early 2026. Following the January 19 reports on the display redesign, April 2026 saw further details emerge. On April 23, Macworld reported the appearance of dummy units for the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and a new iPhone Ultra, showcasing design elements for the late-2026 lineup. Tech YouTuber Vadim Yuryev shared photos of these metal dummy units, which included the 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, and the rumored iPhone Fold or iPhone Ultra. As May 2026 progressed, a more comprehensive picture came into view, with leakers like Digital Chat Station and Instant Digital sharing specifics on battery improvements, a unified back glass design, and unusually high display brightness demands.

Internally, the iPhone 18 Pro lineup is expected to house Apple's new A20 Pro chip, built on an advanced 2nm process, promising significant performance and efficiency gains. All models in the Pro lineup are anticipated to standardize 12GB of RAM, an upgrade for the base Pro model which previously came with 8GB. Connectivity is also set to improve with a new C2 modem for enhanced cellular performance and an N2 chip for better WiFi. Additionally, 5G via Satellite capabilities are rumored to be included in the iPhone 18 Pro models. The overall build is also expected to feature titanium construction, a material choice seen in recent Pro models, along with larger camera lenses.

Regarding the visual aesthetic, new color options are reportedly on the way. Macworld exclusively detailed a new palette, with a purplish "Dark Cherry" color leading the charge, alongside light blue, dark gray, and silver options. Sonny Dickson on X later shared images of iPhone 18 Pro dummy models in these four colors, seemingly confirming the reports. The existing Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue colors are expected to be discontinued as part of this refresh.

These leaks arrive in the broader context of Apple's evolving product strategy. Beyond the standard iPhone 18 Pro models, a staggered launch strategy is reportedly in the works, with the standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18E, and a second-generation iPhone Air potentially arriving later, in February or March 2027. This marks a departure from Apple's traditional all-at-once fall launch. Furthermore, Apple's anticipated entry into the foldable smartphone market, with a device possibly named iPhone Fold or iPhone Ultra, is also rumored to launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series in September 2026. However, reports from sources like Fixed Focus Digital on Weibo and Instant Digital suggest Apple is facing production challenges with the foldable iPhone, particularly concerning pre-assembly processes, surface-mount technology, and durability concerns related to its custom hinge mechanism. These issues could potentially push the device's launch beyond its rumored September 2026 timeframe.

The sheer volume and specificity of these leaks suggest that Apple is indeed preparing for a significant generational leap with the iPhone 18 Pro. From a redesigned display that minimizes distractions to a sophisticated camera system that promises professional-grade control, these devices aim to redefine the premium smartphone experience. The strategic decision to absorb increased component costs and introduce a staggered launch also highlights Apple's aggressive stance in a highly competitive market, setting the stage for a pivotal year for the company and its flagship product line.
