Iris Nichole Patterson Fought Cancer While Building Healthcare Empire

6d ago

Iris Nichole Patterson didn't just build a groundbreaking healthcare organization; she fought for her life while doing it. The founder and CEO of Chicago Integrated Health navigated a personal battle with stage 4 colon cancer, undergoing treatment without stepping away from her mission to redefine wellness in Chicago.

Her diagnosis in July 2023 marked a profound personal challenge, yet Patterson remained at the helm of her organization. Reports indicate she endured two hospitalizations and three surgeries, spending a total of 21 days in the hospital. Despite these immense hurdles, her commitment to her work never wavered, a testament to her resilience and purpose-driven leadership. Her physicians reportedly offered reassurance, stating, "You didn't do this to yourself. It happened to you." While she temporarily paused seeing her nutrition clients to prioritize her health, her dedication to her broader vision only deepened as she recovered from the illness.

Chicago Integrated Health, which launched in January 2020, stands out for its comprehensive four-fold model. It seamlessly integrates mental health therapy, clinical massage therapy, nutrition coaching, and personal training under one coordinated care structure. The organization further enhances its offerings with trauma-informed yoga, reflecting Patterson's core belief that true healing requires a holistic approach that nurtures the mind, body, and spirit in unison. She has been quoted articulating this vision, stating, "True healing happens when we care for the mind, body, and spirit together," and affirming, "Chicago Integrated Health was built to create a safe space where individuals and families feel seen, supported, and empowered to reclaim their health and live fully."

Accessibility is a cornerstone of Chicago Integrated Health's mission, particularly for underserved communities across the Chicago area. The organization accepts both Medicaid and private insurance, a significant distinction as it is one of the few integrated wellness organizations in Illinois led by a non-physician to operate under this dual coverage model. This inclusive approach is crucial in regions where out-of-pocket wellness costs often act as a substantial barrier to receiving necessary care.

Currently, the organization serves over 200 members and has broadened its impact through Project Thrive, a youth-centered wellness initiative. Project Thrive caters to children, teens, and young adults aged 5–21, providing integrated mental health, behavioral health, academic support, and physical wellness programming. Chicago Integrated Health maintains a dedicated staff of 18 professionals, including mental health practitioners, a nurse practitioner, a supervising medical doctor, personal trainers, and massage therapists. While primarily operating as a 100% telemedicine practice, it also features a physical wellness center and medical practice situated in Matteson, Illinois, approximately 20 minutes outside of Chicago. Reports estimate the organization's annual revenue at $1,026,660, with a valuation of $3,300,000.

Patterson’s personal journey and professional background deeply inform her dedication to holistic health. She is a Certified Holistic Nutritionist and Certified Health and Wellness Coach, having earned her certification from the American Fitness Professionals Association (AFPA). Additionally, she is a licensed Clinical Massage Therapist, a qualification she obtained upon graduating from The Soma Institute for Massage Therapy in 2010. Before establishing Chicago Integrated Health, Patterson founded Iris Botanicals in 2014, a natural hair care company that achieved retail placement in Whole Foods Market. This earlier venture was inspired by her personal experience with hair loss, prompting her to research and formulate her own hair growth products.

Her formative years in Englewood, Chicago, and her experience as a teen mother at 16, further shaped her perspective. Patterson's own health journey also includes a prior diagnosis of bipolar depression, which she successfully managed through a holistic approach emphasizing nutrition, fitness, and stress management. Reflecting on these experiences, she states, "Nutrition, health and wellness are important to Patterson because they saved her life." Her overarching goal remains to help individuals "find their happy place in health."

Chicago Integrated Health is also a multi-generational family endeavor, embodying a powerful legacy of women leadership. Patterson's mother, Lauren White-Johnson, serves as the Vice President of the organization and is a Licensed Psychotherapist. Patterson's daughter, Teylor Johnson, a recent graduate of DePaul University, is also actively involved and is on her path to becoming a licensed psychologist. Patterson has publicly acknowledged the profound significance of their shared journey, stating, "We are remarkable women running this company. My mom was 16 and pregnant when she gave birth to me, and I too was only 16 when I gave birth to my daughter. We were young moms, but this did not stop us from becoming successful and giving back to our community." This intergenerational leadership underscores a deep commitment to community upliftment and overcoming adversity. The organization proudly identifies as woman-led, Black-owned, and LGBTQI+ inclusive.

This story resonates deeply within the broader context of healthcare disparities and the escalating demand for holistic wellness solutions, particularly within Black communities. Patterson highlights a "growing epidemic of Heart Disease and Diabetes" in these communities, which Chicago Integrated Health directly aims to combat. Through its integrated approach, the organization strives to fight against lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, cancers, and hypertension. Patterson emphasizes, "We work hard to bring a shift to fight against lifestyle diseases like Diabetes, Heart Disease and Cancers and Hypertension. All of that can be a snowball effect and cause more chronic disease." The organization's launch during the challenging COVID-19 pandemic further underscored its critical role in addressing emergent healthcare needs.

Iris Nichole Patterson's personal resilience, exemplified by her triumph over stage 4 colon cancer while simultaneously building a pioneering healthcare organization, powerfully reinforces her message: "Put you first … You don't have to work forever, we're not robots." Her journey and the impact of Chicago Integrated Health highlight the vital importance of comprehensive, accessible, and compassionate care in fostering community health and well-being, paving a path for others to reclaim their health and live fully.
