Duchess Meghan Markle delivered a powerful call to action in Geneva, Switzerland, as she joined global leaders for the unveiling of the Lost Screen Memorial. The somber art installation stands as a chilling testament to the escalating crisis of online harm, honoring children whose lives were tragically cut short due to digital dangers.

The Duchess of Sussex, 44, made the solo trip on Sunday, May 17, 2026, to participate in the significant event held at the Place des Nations. Her presence, alongside World Health Organization (WHO) leaders, health ministers, government officials, and child safety advocates, brought renewed international attention to the urgent need for global protections against online threats facing young people. The gathering took place ahead of the 79th World Health Assembly, underscoring the gravity of the issue on the international health agenda.

The Lost Screen Memorial is a poignant art installation featuring 50 illuminated lightboxes, each crafted to resemble a giant smartphone. Every lightbox displays the lock screen image of a child who tragically lost their life due to harm linked to social media. These harms include cyberbullying, grooming, sextortion, and exposure to content promoting self-harm, among other digital perils. A digital companion available online allows visitors to delve deeper, reading and hearing each child's story recounted in the words of their grieving parents. This impactful memorial was co-hosted by the WHO and Archewell Philanthropies, the charitable foundation established by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, in partnership with The Parents' Network.

During the ceremony, Meghan Markle delivered a moving speech that resonated deeply with attendees and the families present. She emphasized the human cost behind the statistics, stating, "Behind me stands The Lost Screen Memorial. Not statistics. Not avatars. Not data points. Children. Each name belonged to a child who was loved beyond measure. A child whose laughter once filled a kitchen. Whose shoes once waited by a front door. Whose future once felt limitless." The Duchess continued, her voice firm, "Now their faces ask the world questions we can no longer avoid."

Markle did not mince words when addressing the systemic issues contributing to the crisis. She highlighted how "children today are being shaped by systems designed to capture attention at any cost: relentless algorithms, exploitative engagement, and endless exposure to harmful content that they are not seeking out." Challenging societal complacency, she questioned the acceptance of such digital dangers, remarking, "If an adult is barely able to survive the bullying and predation of the online world and the dangers that these platforms can bring, how is a child?"

Her address further asserted a critical point: "For too long, we have accepted a dangerous bargain: that modern connection must come at the cost of the innocence of childhood. That innovation excuses injury. That speed matters more than safety." Drawing powerful parallels to other public safety concerns, Meghan urged global leaders to act decisively. "We did not tell parents to create their own seatbelts. We did not ask children to test unsafe medicine. We did not shrug at poisoned water or defective toys and call it the price of progress.
