Malia Obama is charting her own course in Hollywood, and according to her mother, she's doing it strictly on her own terms. During a recent episode of the "IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson" podcast, Michelle Obama offered a candid glimpse into her 27-year-old daughter's burgeoning filmmaking career, making it clear that Malia is determined to forge an independent professional identity.

Speaking with acclaimed filmmaker Steven Spielberg, who was a guest on the episode reported around late May 2026, Michelle Obama playfully confessed that Malia "doesn't want us around her stuff." She further quipped that her eldest daughter "will never invite us to anything that she does," underscoring Malia's desire to keep her creative endeavors separate from her parents' prominent public personas.

Malia Ann Obama, born on July 4, 1998, in Chicago, Illinois, has lived much of her life under intense public scrutiny. As the daughter of former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama, she and her younger sister, Sasha, spent their formative years growing up in the White House after her father assumed the presidency in 2009.

Her interest in the entertainment industry began early, even before college. In 2014, prior to her junior year of high school, Malia gained experience as a production assistant on Halle Berry's CBS sci-fi series *Extant*. The following year, in July 2015, she interned on the New York City set of HBO's *Girls*, a series created by Lena Dunham. After graduating from Sidwell Friends School in June 2016, Malia took a gap year, during which she also interned at The Weinstein Company in February 2017, before enrolling at Harvard University in the fall of 2017 to major in Visual and Environmental Studies.

After completing her studies at Harvard in 2021, Malia continued to actively pursue her filmmaking aspirations. She joined the writers' room for Donald Glover's Amazon Prime Video series *Swarm*, which premiered in March 2023, and is credited with co-writing the episode titled "Girl, Bye." Donald Glover, also known by his musical moniker Childish Gambino, has publicly praised Malia's abilities. He described her as "an amazingly talented person" who is "really focused, and she's working really hard," adding that he feels "she's just somebody who's gonna have really good things coming soon. Glover reportedly offered Malia some direct advice, telling her, "You're Obama's daughter. So if you make a bad film, it will follow you around." Malia made her directorial debut with the short film *The Heart*, which she also wrote, in 2023. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 18, 2024. For this project and subsequent professional work, Malia has chosen to be credited as Malia Ann, using her middle name to establish her own creative identity and distinguish herself from her famous surname. In a "meet the artist" video released by Sundance, Malia described *The Heart* as being "about lost objects and lonely people and forgiveness and regret," expressing hope that the film would make viewers "feel a bit less lonely, or at least reminds you not to forget about the people who are." By 2025, her directing portfolio had expanded to include a Nike commercial featuring WNBA star A'ja Wilson for the "A'One" sneaker campaign.
