Prince Celebration 2026 Set for Five-Day Minneapolis Takeover

7h ago

Minneapolis is about to turn purple once more. A decade after the world lost a musical giant, the city is preparing for "Prince Celebration 2026," an unprecedented five-day event designed to honor the enduring legacy of Prince Rogers Nelson. This isn't just a tribute; it's a full-scale pilgrimage, promising to immerse fans in the spirit, sound, and sheer genius of an artist who redefined music and culture.

Set to run from June 3 through June 7, 2026, the "Celebration of Life" is billed as the most expansive annual tribute yet. It will transform Paisley Park, Prince's legendary Chanhassen studio complex, along with multiple venues across downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul, into a vibrant hub of music, storytelling, and community. The comprehensive programming aims to bring together fans, collaborators, and artists from around the globe, ensuring Prince's extraordinary impact is felt anew.

The festivities kick off on Wednesday, June 3, with a high-energy party at First Avenue, the historic downtown Minneapolis concert hall where Prince forged his early mythology and famously filmed "Purple Rain." DJ Lenka Paris will set the vibe, joined by the incomparable soul and R&B titan, Chaka Khan. The momentum continues on Thursday, June 4, with a "Club 3121 Celebration & Jam Session" at the Royalston Event Center, featuring DJ Rashida and performances by vocalists Liv Warfield and Ashley Tamar, alongside surprise musical guests, echoing Prince's spontaneous after-show jams. That same day, Target Field will host a special "Prince Night at the Twins."

Friday, June 5, marks a historical moment with the "Prince Celebration of Life 10th Anniversary Concert" at The Armory. This concert will feature a first-time onstage reunion of members from two of Prince's legendary bands: The Revolution, represented by Bobby Z and Lisa Coleman, and The New Power Generation, with Morris Hayes, Tony M., Sonny Thompson, Levi Seacer Jr., Cora Coleman, Cassandra O'Neal, Greg Boyer, Mike Phillips, Kenni Holmen, Liv Warfield, Ashley Tamar, and The Twins all slated to perform. The star-studded lineup also includes headliners Morris Day and Sounds of Blackness, plus Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Miguel, former child prodigy Tevin Campbell, neo-soul architect Bilal, and Kat Graham. Throughout the day at Royalston Square, attendees can engage in panel discussions like "Women of Prince's Musical Legacy" and "Conversation with Bootsy Collins," followed by a film screening of "Under the Cherry Moon," celebrating its 40th anniversary. Funk icon Bootsy Collins and legendary producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis are listed as special guests and panel participants throughout the celebration.

The celebration culminates on Sunday, June 7, which would have been Prince's 68th birthday. This final day includes serene Lake Minnetonka boat cruises, offering scheduled times for fans to experience the beauty of the region. Paisley Park will open its doors for expanded Open House experiences, inviting fans into Prince's world through music, storytelling, interactive exhibits, and community spaces across the NPG Music Club and outdoor festival grounds. "The Vault Experience" will offer exclusive access to curated unreleased concert footage and audio from Prince's extensive archive, alongside a Gospel Brunch and an evening drone show. The "People's Museum for Prince" will also have its opening day in North Minneapolis, near where Prince grew up, further cementing his connection to the city. Throughout the five days, free community events are also scheduled at the Renee Good, Alex Pretti, and George Floyd memorials.

The roots of this expansive event trace back to Prince's untimely passing on April 21, 2016. Since then, annual tributes have sought to keep his memory and music alive, but "Prince Celebration 2026" is designed to be a definitive moment, a decade on. Prince, born Prince Rogers Nelson, left an indelible mark on music, fashion, and artistic independence, a legacy that continues to influence generations. His Chanhassen complex, Paisley Park, was not just a home but a creative sanctuary where much of his groundbreaking work was conceived and recorded, making it a natural epicenter for such a profound remembrance.

The decision to feature "Under the Cherry Moon," a film celebrating its 40th anniversary, highlights the breadth of Prince's artistic endeavors beyond music. Similarly, the inclusion of locations like First Avenue underscores the deep connection between Prince and Minneapolis itself, a city that served as both his muse and his stage from the very beginning of his career. These elements weave a rich tapestry, reflecting the many facets of Prince's creative life and his profound bond with his hometown.

The significance of this event was underscored by L. Londell McMillan, Prince's former attorney, manager, friend, and co-manager of his estate. He emphasized, "This year's Celebration honors Prince's extraordinary musical genius yet more importantly, it honors his spirit, humanity, and love that defined his life." McMillan further stated, "Ten years later, his music continues to unite people across generations and around the world, but what feels especially important right now is creating space for community, healing, joy, and reflection, values Prince carried with him every day." He affirmed Prince's enduring presence, noting, "Although Prince in the physical is past, he lives. Prince lives today. He remains with us. You hear it everywhere you go."

Maykala Elder, Paisley Park Museum Collections Curator, spoke to the venue's purpose, saying, "Prince created Paisley Park here as a creative sanctuary so we want to make sure the space is available to be able to come be here on this special day and remember Prince as one big purple family." Prince's nephew, Johnny Nelson, acknowledged the mixed emotions surrounding the anniversary, stating, "Well, I'll tell you, it is bittersweet. We're just excited that everybody's come out in support to help us continue with this legacy." Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey also weighed in on the city's enthusiasm, remarking, "If Prince taught us anything, it's that subtlety is overrated," while Ward 7 Council Member Elizabeth Schaefer declared, "We are going to gather in mass, lift our voices in unison and stand together, bringing song and hope and joy to the streets of Minneapolis," adding, "we're gonna party like it's 1999 in 2026."

A major highlight promises to be Saturday, June 6, with a free, all-ages "Prince Celebration Block Party and Prince Sing-Along" at the Prince Mural in downtown Minneapolis. Running from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., with the sing-along from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., this public event is designed to recreate the spontaneous outpouring of love and music that filled Minneapolis streets following Prince's death. Musical director Sanford Moore will lead a 100-person Minneapolis-based choir, with organizers anticipating up to 15,000 participants. This communal gathering reflects the deep connection between Prince and his fans, and the city's desire to honor that bond. Another Prince Celebration Block Party will take place at First Avenue from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Prince's legacy extends far beyond his groundbreaking music. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest musicians of all time, a style-defying genius, an influential fashion icon, and a fierce advocate for artists' rights. This celebration, with its diverse programming from historic concerts to community sing-alongs and museum openings, underscores the multifaceted nature of his impact. It's a testament to how his art continues to resonate globally, uniting people across generations and cultures, and serving as a powerful reminder of his spirit of innovation and love.

As Minneapolis prepares to host this massive tribute, the "Prince Celebration 2026" stands as a beacon for fans worldwide. It's a chance not just to remember a legend, but to experience the collective joy and shared humanity that Prince himself championed. The city, his collaborators, and his family are poised to deliver an unforgettable five days, ensuring that the purple reign continues to inspire and uplift for years to come.
