Red Dead 2 Hits 85 Million Sales, Now 3rd Best-Selling Game Ever

1w ago

Eight years after its initial release, Rockstar Games' acclaimed Western epic, Red Dead Redemption 2, has ridden into the history books with a monumental sales milestone. The game has officially sold over 85 million copies worldwide, a figure confirmed by its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, during its Q4 2026 quarterly earnings presentation on Thursday, May 22, 2026. This achievement solidifies its position as the third best-selling video game ever released, with sales figures accurate as of March 31, 2026.

The latest sales report highlights the game's enduring appeal, as it surpasses Nintendo's Wii Sports, which previously held a spot with nearly 83 million units sold. While impressive, Red Dead Redemption 2 still trails behind the industry's top two giants: Minecraft, boasting over 350 million copies sold, and Rockstar's own Grand Theft Auto V, which has moved more than 225 million units. Both top contenders are also multi-platform titles, underscoring the broad reach required for such massive commercial success.

The journey to this milestone began back on October 18, 2016, when Rockstar Games formally announced the title following a series of tantalizing teases days prior. Initially slated for a second-half 2017 release, the game experienced two significant delays. Rockstar Games ultimately announced on February 1, 2018, that the title would hit shelves on October 26, 2018, for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Developers cited the need for “a little extra time for polish.” PC players received their version on November 5, 2019, with a Stadia release following on November 19, 2019.

From the moment it dropped, Red Dead Redemption 2 demonstrated its commercial prowess. It raked in an astounding US$725 million in sales during its opening weekend alone, marking it as the second-biggest launch in entertainment history. Within a mere eight days, it had already outpaced the lifetime sales of its predecessor, the original Red Dead Redemption. The game continued its strong momentum, selling 23 million copies within its first two months by December 2018. By 2022, sales had surged past the 50 million mark, reaching 79 million by November 2025, and 82 million by February 2026. The most recent three million copies sold between March and May 2026 pushed it to the current 85 million total. Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick noted during the earnings call that Red Dead Redemption 2 achieved its highest level of annual unit sales in the past fiscal year since its launch year, a remarkable feat for a game of its age. The entire Red Dead series, including the original game and its 2023 remaster, has now collectively sold nearly 115 million units.

The game's extensive development cycle, spanning over eight years, reportedly made it one of the most expensive video games ever created. Rockstar Games reportedly brought all of its studios together to form one large team dedicated to its creation. However, reports from the time also indicated a demanding “crunch schedule of 100-hour weeks,” with accounts of mandatory and unpaid overtime during its development.

Despite the intense development, Red Dead Redemption 2 garnered “universal acclaim” from review aggregator Metacritic, solidifying its place as one of the highest-rated PlayStation 4 and Xbox One games alongside Grand Theft Auto V. Critics widely praised its immersive story, rich characters, expansive open world, stunning graphics, evocative music, and meticulous level of detail. Yet, it wasn't without its detractors; some reviewers and players pointed to a somewhat clunky control scheme, an emphasis on realism that occasionally overshadowed player freedom, a perceived shallow game world with limited enterable interiors in towns, a fast in-game clock, and occasional visual bugs.

The continued commercial longevity of Red Dead Redemption 2 is particularly noteworthy given its post-launch trajectory. The game achieved this 85 million sales milestone without receiving a native PlayStation 5 version, a 60 frames per second mode on current-generation consoles, or any major story downloadable content (DLC). Furthermore, its online multiplayer component, Red Dead Online, which launched as a public beta in November 2018, is widely considered to have an “effectively abandoned” development status, with Rockstar Games reportedly reallocating resources to focus on the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI. Roger Clark, the voice actor for the game’s protagonist, Arthur Morgan, acknowledged the vital role of the fanbase in the game’s sustained success, stating publicly that “it’s the fans that keep it going” and expressing gratitude for making it a “career-defining work for him.”

This ongoing success underscores the profound impact Red Dead Redemption 2 has had on the gaming industry. It demonstrates that a critically acclaimed, deeply immersive open-world experience can maintain robust sales for years after its initial release, even in the absence of continuous major content updates. The broader Red Dead Redemption franchise has also benefited from recent platform migrations, with the original game and its companion software being ported to various platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Switch, and mobile operating systems. As the gaming world looks ahead, anticipation builds for Grand Theft Auto VI, a title Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick expects to be a significant driver of future revenue growth, with projections suggesting it could sell as many as 25 million copies on its first day alone.
