Sapphic Love Story Takes Center Stage in Bridgerton Season 5

6d ago

Netflix's acclaimed period drama Bridgerton is charting new territory, with its fifth season confirmed to feature a central sapphic romance. This marks a significant departure from the original novels and a groundbreaking moment for the immensely popular series, with its premiere slated for 2027.

Production for Bridgerton Season 5 officially kicked off in March 2026. The decision to fast-track the release of this installment, breaking the show's usual two-year hiatus between seasons, was publicly announced by Netflix's chief content officer, Bela Bajaria. The announcement came during an upfront presentation to advertisers held in New York on May 13, 2026, signaling the streaming giant's commitment to delivering this highly anticipated storyline sooner than expected.

The upcoming season will center on the unfolding love story between Francesca Bridgerton, portrayed by Hannah Dodd, and Michaela Stirling, played by Masali Baduza. The narrative picks up two years after the unexpected death of Francesca's husband, John Stirling, who was played by Victor Alli. Following this profound loss, Francesca decides to re-enter the marriage market, driven by practical considerations rather than romantic aspirations. Her carefully laid plans, however, become complicated with the arrival of John's cousin, Michaela Stirling, who returns to London to manage the Kilmartin estate. The season is expected to delve into the intricate feelings that develop between Francesca and Michaela, compelling Francesca to confront her pragmatic intentions against her burgeoning inner passions. Showrunner Jess Brownell has indicated that the season will explore Francesca and Michaela's shared grief for John's passing and the mutual guilt they experience as their feelings for each other grow.

This storyline represents a notable divergence from Julia Quinn's original novel, "When He Was Wicked," where Francesca's love interest is a male character named Michael. The deliberate choice to gender-swap the character to Michaela was an intentional decision, one that has received approval directly from author Julia Quinn. Showrunner Jess Brownell described the character change as "groundbreaking," emphasizing the significance of dedicating an entire Bridgerton season to a sapphic relationship. Brownell further elaborated on the season's core theme, stating that it will be characterized by intense "yearning." She also highlighted the show's aim to portray "queer joy" rather than focusing on "queer trauma," noting the fun involved in its creation.

The cast for Season 5 will see Hannah Dodd and Masali Baduza taking on the leading roles of Francesca Bridgerton and Michaela Stirling. Other familiar faces confirmed to return include Ruth Gemmell as Violet Bridgerton, Claudia Jessie as Eloise Bridgerton, Golda Rosheuvel as Queen Charlotte, Adjoa Andoh as Lady Danbury, Polly Walker as Portia Featherington, Lorraine Ashbourne as Mrs. Varley, and Julie Andrews lending her voice as Lady Whistledown. Nicola Coughlan, who portrays Penelope Featherington, has confirmed her return, though in a more limited capacity. Jonathan Bailey, as Anthony Bridgerton, and Simone Ashley, as Kate Bridgerton, are also expected to make appearances, potentially in cameo roles. New cast members joining for Season 5 include Tega Alexander as Christopher Anderson, described as a mysterious bachelor and son of Lord Anderson; Jacqueline Boatswain as Helen Stirling, Michaela's mother; and Gemma Knight Jones as Lady Elizabeth Ashworth, an old friend and confidante of Michaela's.

The announcement of a sapphic lead romance has generated considerable excitement among the fanbase. Public reactions on social media have included enthusiastic comments such as "Lesbian lead couple in a mainstream romance show, I could f***ing cry" and "THIS IS EVERYTHING TO ME." This storyline holds particular significance as it marks the first central queer romance within the main Bridgerton series. The broader Bridgerton universe has previously explored queer representation, including Benedict Bridgerton's bisexual encounters in earlier seasons and a secondary queer romance between Brimsley and Reynolds in the prequel series Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.

Series creator and executive producer, Shonda Rhimes, has previously outlined a long-term vision for the franchise, confirming plans for "exactly eight" seasons, with each installment dedicated to the love story of one of the eight Bridgerton children. Netflix had already renewed Bridgerton for both seasons 5 and 6 simultaneously prior to the Season 4 premiere, underscoring the streaming giant's continued investment in the popular franchise. The show has a history of deviating from the chronological order of Julia Quinn's books, as evidenced by Season 3 focusing on Colin and Penelope, and Season 4 on Benedict. Season 4, which centered on Benedict Bridgerton's romance with Sophie Baek, premiered in two parts in January and February 2026, with production concluding in May 2025. Showrunner Jess Brownell has also hinted that Eloise Bridgerton is slated to be the lead for Season 6.

The expedited release of Season 5 is a direct result of the production team's deliberate efforts to "speed up" the schedule, a goal that showrunner Jess Brownell had previously discussed. This accelerated timeline ensures that fans will not have to wait as long for this pivotal and highly anticipated chapter in the Bridgerton saga, setting the stage for a culturally impactful narrative in 2027.
