Shaquille O'Neal and Son Shaqir Celebrate Dual Graduations

6d ago

NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal and his son, Shaqir O'Neal, have publicly underscored the family's long-standing commitment to education, each reaching major academic milestones just one week apart in May 2026. This dual celebration highlights the elder O'Neal's consistent message that success extends far beyond the basketball court.

Shaquille O'Neal, at 54 years old, led the way, earning a Master of Liberal Arts degree from Louisiana State University's College of Humanities & Social Sciences. The commencement ceremony took place on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. This venue holds particular significance for O'Neal, as it was where he shined as a college basketball player. His master's thesis, titled "Interdisciplinary Approach to Mentorship through the lens of the epic poem, The Odyssey," reportedly focused on enhancing mentorship, especially for athletes, a field he entered after recognizing a need for more sports psychology leadership from those with professional athletic experience.

During the ceremony, O'Neal also addressed the graduating class, delivering a speech that mixed inspirational messages with his well-known humor. He advised the graduates, stating, "I'm proud of you all today, but this is not the end of your journey. Make sure to continue to strive, continue to learn, continue to have fun, and continue to eat Shaq-A-Licious gummies at your local 7-Eleven and all the other stores."

Exactly seven days later, on Saturday, May 23, 2026, his 23-year-old son, Shaqir O'Neal, received his bachelor's degree in health science from California State University, Sacramento. The ceremony was held at the Golden 1 Center in downtown Sacramento. Standing 6-foot-8 in his cap and gown, adorned with a gold student-athlete stole, Shaqir reportedly crossed the stage with a wide smile to collect his diploma. Shaquille O'Neal was present to witness and celebrate his son's achievement.

Shaqir later shared his reflections on social media, acknowledging the challenges he faced during his academic journey. He posted, "8 out. Thank god for allowing me to graduate school has always been hard for me but thanks to my parents and family they helped me get through it all the way and finally finish. Thank you to @parkcenturyschool@missashleyeharding for teaching me everything and @shaq @iamshaunie for providing the best life and education I could ever imagine. 2nd degree otw!" His father, Shaquille, also expressed immense pride, sharing a photo with Shaqir and referring to him as his twin, adding that it was "time for bigger and better things."

The elder O'Neal's academic journey is a testament to his persistent pursuit of education, which began long after his initial college basketball career. After leaving Louisiana State University early in 1992 to enter the NBA Draft, he made a promise to his mother, Lucille O'Neal, that he would complete his education. He fulfilled this vow by earning a Bachelor of Science in General Studies from LSU in December 2000, with his jersey notably being retired the night after his undergraduate graduation.

His educational pursuits continued, leading him to earn a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Phoenix in 2005. O'Neal reportedly sought this degree after noticing he was often overlooked in business discussions. He explained, "I noticed that every time I'd go to a business meeting that the guys who we're doing deals with would be like, 'Hello Shaq, how are you doing?' And then they would turn away and look at my lawyers and my accountants and all those guys. So, I said, 'Oh, you guys don't think I'm in charge. You guys don't think I understand the lingo.'" To facilitate an in-person learning experience for the predominantly online program, O'Neal famously paid for 15 of his friends to enroll with him, meeting the minimum requirement for a physical classroom setting. He stated that this degree "solidifies that I'm a businessman."

O'Neal's academic achievements culminated in a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Organizational Learning and Leadership with a specialization in Human Resource Development from Barry University, which he received on May 5, 2012. He completed 54 credit hours with a cumulative GPA of 3.813, and his capstone project explored "How Leaders Utilize Humor or Seriousness in Leadership Styles." He dedicated this doctoral degree to his mother, stating, "This is for my mother, who always stressed the importance of education. I am proud to have achieved a doctoral degree and wish to thank my professors and Barry University for helping make this dream a reality. I'm smart enough to know that, even at my tender age, my pursuit of education is never finished." He has consistently pushed back against claims that his doctorate was merely honorary.

Shaqir's path to graduation also included a notable collegiate athletic career. He transferred to Sacramento State from Florida A&M University for his final year of collegiate eligibility, having previously played for Texas Southern University, where he redshirted one season and played two active seasons. Prior to his college career, he graduated from Union Grove High School in McDonough, Georgia, in 2021, and also played at Crossroads High School in Santa Monica, California. Athletically, Shaqir had a significant achievement earlier in the spring of 2026, being crowned the National College Slam Dunk Champion at the 37th annual State Farm College Slam Dunk Championship in Indianapolis. In his single season with the Sacramento State Hornets, he started all 31 games, averaging 5.3 points and 3.2 rebounds per game.

This family achievement serves as a powerful testament to the value placed on higher education within the O'Neal household, echoing Shaquille's consistent public advocacy. For a family rooted in athletic prominence, these academic milestones send a clear message about the importance of intellectual pursuits and lifelong learning, offering a significant role model for younger generations within Black culture and beyond.

The dual graduations of Shaquille and Shaqir O'Neal in May 2026 reinforce a legacy that prioritizes not just professional success in sports or business, but also the continuous pursuit of knowledge. It highlights a family tradition of setting and achieving ambitious educational goals, demonstrating that dedication and hard work can lead to accomplishments both on and off the court.
