Tracee Ellis Ross Set For Broadway Debut This Summer

2w ago

Tracee Ellis Ross is stepping onto the Great White Way. The acclaimed actress is set to make her highly anticipated Broadway debut this summer, taking on the lead role in the critically celebrated one-person drama, "Every Brilliant Thing."

Starting July 7, 2026, Ross will command the stage at the Hudson Theatre in New York City, continuing her run until August 9, 2026. This marks the fourth extension for the production, which has garnered significant attention for its unique format and powerful message. Ross will follow in the footsteps of a distinguished lineup of performers; Tony Award winner Daniel Radcliffe opened the Broadway revival on March 12, 2026, concluding his engagement on May 24, 2026. Following him, Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner Mariska Hargitay is making her own Broadway debut in the show, performing from May 26, 2026, through July 5, 2026. The announcement of her participation was made on Monday, May 18, 2026, sparking widespread excitement across the entertainment world.

"Every Brilliant Thing" is far from a typical monologue. It's an interactive solo show where the actor, now Ross, engages directly with the audience, inviting them to participate in the narrative. This dynamic approach means no two performances are exactly alike, creating a unique and personal experience for everyone in the theater.

Known for her indelible portrayals of Dr. Rainbow Johnson in "Black-ish" and Joan Clayton in "Girlfriends," Ross has earned a reputation for her comedic timing, dramatic depth, and vibrant personality. Her extensive television career includes six Emmy Award nominations and a Golden Globe win. While her television work has made her a household name, Ross is no stranger to the stage, having previously appeared in New York and Los Angeles productions of "Love, Loss, and What I Wore."

Born October 29, 1972, she is the daughter of legendary Motown singer Diana Ross and music manager Robert Ellis Silberstein. She honed her craft early, earning a bachelor's degree in theater arts from Brown University in 1994, and even worked in the fashion industry as an editor and model before her acting career took off. Beyond her artistic endeavors, Ross is also a successful entrepreneur, having founded PATTERN Beauty, a popular hair and body care brand.

The play itself, "Every Brilliant Thing," was penned by Olivier Award nominee Duncan Macmillan with Jonny Donahoe and directed by Olivier & Tony Award nominee Jeremy Herrin. Its narrative explores profound themes through a deceptively simple premise: a character begins compiling a list of "every brilliant thing" that makes life worth living, prompted by their mother's struggles with depression and suicide attempts. This list grows throughout their life, encompassing countless moments of joy.

The play's origins trace back approximately two decades to a 15-minute monologue called "Sleeve Notes," written by Macmillan for an actor friend, Rosie Thomson. He later expanded it with comedian Jonny Donahoe, integrating Donahoe's background in comedy and improvisation, which led to the signature audience participation. The production has since been performed in over 80 countries globally and was adapted into an HBO special starring co-creator Donahoe. The current Broadway revival has received a 2026 Tony Award nomination for Best Revival of a Play, with Daniel Radcliffe also earning a 2026 Tony Award nomination for Best Leading Actor in a Play.

Ross herself shared her mixed emotions about the new venture. "I am so excited, and I am also so nervous, which I think is appropriate," she stated, reflecting on the magnitude of the moment. She further elaborated on the play's unique structure, explaining, "It is a one-person show that is also not a solo show. It is a monologue that is told by the actor, which, in this case, will be me, with the audience, which makes every performance special and different." On Instagram, she encouraged fans, writing, "I'll be starring in the Tony-nominated play @brilliantbway! Come see your girl on Broadway. I really hope you can come and see me."

Co-writer Duncan Macmillan expressed his enthusiasm for her casting. "I've been a fan of Tracee's work for a long time and knew her quick wit, intelligence, and emotional depth would be the perfect fit for 'Every Brilliant Thing,'" Macmillan commented. He added, "We are beyond thrilled that she has chosen to make her Broadway debut with us this summer. We can't wait to welcome her to the Hudson Theatre, and for audiences to experience her unique take on the play." Mariska Hargitay, who will perform just before Ross, also lauded the production as "an extraordinary gift," highlighting her attraction to "themes of healing and renewal." She described the script as "an emotional experience filled with tears, laughter and love," and considered her Broadway debut in a play that "affirms life so emphatically" to be the fulfillment of a lifelong dream, calling the piece "a triumph that guides audiences toward light, compassion and hope through a deeply personal story." Public reaction to Ross's casting has been overwhelmingly positive, with many reports calling it "excellent casting" and praising her perceived warmth and likability as an ideal fit for the interactive nature of the role.

This move to Broadway, particularly in a one-person show that delves into mental health, is seen as a significant artistic step for Ross. The play's profound exploration of depression and resilience aligns with important cultural conversations. The production has partnered with Project Healthy Minds, a mental health platform, underscoring its commitment to these themes.

Ross's involvement is also seen as a powerful opportunity to further highlight Black women's experiences with depression, bringing a vital perspective to a widely acclaimed piece of theater. Her ability to connect with audiences, combined with the play's interactive format, promises a unique and impactful theatrical experience that transcends traditional performance.

As Ross prepares to grace the Broadway stage, the anticipation is palpable. Her debut in "Every Brilliant Thing" is poised to be a memorable event, not only for her career but also for the ongoing dialogue surrounding mental wellness, delivered through a story that champions the enduring power of joy and human connection.
